Water Enhancement Technology for Cooling Towers

After installation on a cooling tower, our SRD device will prevent rust and scale build-up without chemicals by circulating cat-ionized water.

How does it work?

By cationizing (giving a positive charge to) circulating water, the treated water is able to absorb a large amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. The captured CO2 bonds with ionized Ca, Si, Mg and other molecules in the water, and facilitates the forming of CaCO3, MgCO3, SiO2 crystals. A cat-ionized membrane forms around these crystals which are dispersed in the water as colloids. Such colloids have the same charge. As a result, they do not bond to form large crystals, and do not adhere to pipe walls or heating surfaces of heat exchangers.

The colloid-state crystals settle and accumulate in the slow-flowing collection basin of the cooling tower. Further, since a cationized membrane forms on the outer surface of the crystal particles, any bond formed with other crystals in the pan is weak, and large scale deposits do not form.

What does the cationing achieve?

Activating water with our SRD changes the structure of the water. The theory of how this

occurs is as follows. The water flow through the device causes our proprietary ceramics to

float up in the current (similar to sand bubbling up from a natural spring), which causes

formation of an electric double layer around the ceramic. The collision or friction of the

ceramics causes a weak electromagnetic/thermoelectric conversion effect, which gives a

positive charge to the water. We call this system the “interfacial electro kinetic


The water activated by this system controls the formation and adhesive

capability of scale, urinary calcification and slime deposits. This activated water also has

increased cleansing power.

Function of Ceramics and Interfacial electrokinetic theory

The outer surface of our ceramics has a negative potential. As a result of the Peltier effect, which is created by the interfacial electrokinetic phenomenon and friction, the improvement of polarization capability and hydrogen bonding capability, and enhancement of interaction with a

substance with unpaired electrons are made possible.

Interfacial electro kinetic phenomenon

It is the electrical occurrence effect that generates at the interface between moving ceramics and flowing water in an electric double layer. The surface of the ceramics is always negatively charged. The water flow is always positively charged. In addition, the Peltier effect gives the water a more positively charged state.

Significant cost savings

Once installed there is no need for ongoing chemical use and “blowdown” (the replacement of water for the entire unit) is not required.  The SRD units do not require maintenance and will run for many years keeping scale, slime and rust away from expensive capital equipment.
